Living with diabetes presents sufferers with numerous challenges - from blood glucose monitoring to diet planning. Fortunately, there are now apps that make these tasks easier and enable better health management. But which app is the best diabetes app 2025? We tested the top apps and show why Diabetes Diary Plus sets new standards.

What makes a good diabetes app?

An effective diabetes app must not only be user-friendly, but also focus on the needs of the user. Here are the criteria we used in our comparison:

  • User-friendliness: Intuitive navigation and easy data entry.
  • Functionality: How easy is it to enter values?
  • Data protection: How is your data handled?
  • Design: How clearly are the apps designed and how easy is it to use?

Comparison of the top diabetes apps

App-Name Price (in USD $) Price Model Notes Login forced Languages Paywall Privacy UI (User interface) UX (User experience)
Diabetes Diary Plus Monthly 2.99 / Yearly 24.0 Free / Subscription Currently only available for iOS. There are not many connections yet. Currently, for example, only Dexcom is supported. No 28 No
MySugr Monthly 3.00 / Annually 28.00 / Various Coaching 39.00 to 400.00 per year. Free / Subscription I myself used mySugr for years. Since the sale to Roche, however, the app has stood still. There are no more new features and the UI/UX is no longer up to date. It's a shame that a good app has been destroyed by large corporations. Yes 26 No
Blood glucose diary, control Weekly 7.00 / Monthly 20.00 / Annually 40.0 Free / Subscription App can only be used if a subscription is purchased. In addition, the costs seem extremely high to me, especially as I can't even test it. Yes 2 Yes
Diabetes diary DiabetoLog Monthly 2.50 / Annually 18.50 Free / Subscription I can't figure out this app. The UI is terrible, it has too many buttons and setting options. I just don't check when I want to use the app. No 7 No
DiabTrend: Diabetes management Premium from 0.50 to 60.00 Free / Subscription Yes, that bear. It seems to me as if they wanted to copy MySugr here. Why exactly are there over 10 subscriptions here that I can buy? How complicated can a subscription model be? There is also a login requirement. Yes 1 Yes
Diabetes Diary+ Premium from 9.00 to 90.00 Free / Subscription Why does the app have 10 different subscriptions? Optional 11 Yes

👩‍🏫 Yes, the list looks really monotonous. Was that intentional? Not necessarily. Every diabetic wants to do one thing above all else with an app: Enter values. Period. The hurdles that many apps bring with them are exactly the points that I criticize: login requirements, poor and confusing operation. Of course, every app has its pros and cons. But take a look at the individual apps for yourself.

Why 99% of apps annoy me as a diabetic

Despite the many diabetes apps on the market, there are clear weaknesses in almost all the apps I have tested. In some cases, I really don't understand why these apps are so popular on the market. Here are some points that make me wonder. These are also the main reasons why I no longer use the apps.

Login requirement
All of the apps require a user account, which is cumbersome and raises questions about data protection.

Outdated design
The user interfaces are often outdated and not very intuitive. This makes entering values tedious and confusing. Why do I have so many fields and input options if I only want to log one value? You can see that no "real" diabetics were asked here, or that the business simply wanted to build in feature after feature. Which is often not good for the design.

Unclear UI
Simple and quick logging of values, which is essential for diabetics, is made difficult by complicated menus and unclear layouts.

Focus on monetization
Constant sales offers and premium features make it annoying to use, especially when something is advertised every few minutes. Don't get me wrong. Diabetes Diary Plus also has a subscription model, but when I log in and 3 banners appear first and I have to log in, it's really annoying.

I just want to log!
What all the apps often don't understand (and this is also the reason why I developed Diabetes Diary Plus) is that as diabetics we want to be able to track our values easily and without wasting time. After all, it's called Diabetes Diary and not Complicated Diabetes Diary. We just want to log within a few seconds!

The advantages of Diabetes Diary Plus at a glance

It was precisely because of the points mentioned above that I wrote my own diabetes diary app a few years ago. I wanted an app that was easy to use and developed according to the motto "By a diabetic, for diabetics". Here are my requirements for my diabetes app.
